Countless people travel to Gatlinburg every single year. Many  are able to drive to this beautiful mountain destination, but some simply live too far away. If you fall into the latter category, you might consider flying.

Unfortunately, there is not a Gatlinburg Airport, per se. The closest airport to the picturesque town is McGhee Tyson Airport. This airport is located approximately 12 miles south of Knoxville, Tennessee and is serviced by several major airlines.

The McGhee Tyson Airport may be smaller, but it has all the necessities a traveler could want. If you need your coffee fix, be sure to stop by Starbucks. Visitors that have time before flying home may want to stop by the Ruby Tuesday for a full meal.

Many of us use more than one electronic device at a time. If you are running low on a charge, you can utilize the power plug-ins under all chairs in the terminal. There is also free WiFi throughout the airport.

Transportation Options

After landing at McGhee Tyson Airport, you will need to find transportation to Gatlinburg. This is also the closest to Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge.

If you plan to spend time outside of Gatlinburg, it is highly suggested that you rent a car. Many people like to spend their vacation traveling between Gatlinburg and its neighboring cities, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville. Unlike Gatlinburg, you will need transportation to get around, as they are much larger and spread out. Several rental companies are available at the airport, such as Avis, Hertz, and Alamo.

Renting a car is also suggested if you plan on visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Day trips to Cades Coves are very popular and unless you book a tour, having your own car to drive is the best route.

If you do not want to rent a car, you can always utilize the services of a taxi, Uber, or Lyft. If the traffic is clear, it will take you just over an hour to reach Gatlinburg from McGhee Tyson Airport.
